How To Open Mac’s .pages File Format On Microsoft Windows?

For people using Android phones, transferring is easy, but for iPad or iPhone users transferring data can be a little difficult. Not all the Ipad, iPhone users have a Macbook, so if you have a Mac, then there is no problem, but if you are trying to transfer the files to windows then you may face problems.

The Apple software saves files in its own personal format with .pages” file extension. This extension, however, is not readable to windows laptops. So if you try to show or edit a .pages file on a Windows PC, you will get errors, and Windows will ask you to choose an app to open the .pages file.

Though you may feel that you will now have to buy a new Mac to work, that is not the case. You can open your files on windows but in a different way. While there are various methods, you can choose whichever suits you perfectly.

Open .pages File on Windows

1. File Extension To Zip

File Extension To Zip

Change the file extension of the file to zip and then try opening it with Microsoft office or PDF or maybe JPEG viewer. This method mainly works for the older versions of .pages, not so much with the newer ones.

This method is rather simple as you only have to convince the PC that the .pages file is not a page format, but instead a zip file. The page format is basically a zip file with jpeg thumbnails and an optional PDF file for the entire document, so you have to tweak the file extension from the Windows file system and you are done.

Step1: File extension visible in windows

Before you begin the tweaking makes sure that the file extension of your age file is visible in windows so that you can easily change the extension of the document. For this right-click on your folder and go to the folders option and click on views. In the views menu uncheck hide extensions for a known file.

Step2: Add.ZIP Extension

Once the extension is visible make a copy of your file (.page file) to work on. Make sure you make a copy and then perform the further steps as the other file will act as a backup of your file. So make a copy and save.

Change the name of the file (either the original or the copy)by clicking in the file and selecting Rename.

While renaming delete the .pages extension and replace it with.zip and then press enter to saver.

Step3: Unzip the File

Open or unzip the file whose extension you changed to .zip. You will now be able to see the content of the file. When you open the file you will see three forms of file:

Three Forms of File

  1. QuickLook which is a File Folder
  2. buildVersionHistory.plist
  3. index.xml

All the files have something, but which is of use to us is the Quick Look.

Step4: Explore the QuickLook folder

While not touching the other folders, open the Quick look folder and you will find a PDF file. The PDF file will either be named the same as the original pages file or will be renamed as a preview. You will see some JPEG files which will be named Thumbnail.

with the same name as the original pages file or named Preview. You may also see a JPEG file named Thumbnail. The visibility of the PDF file will depend on how you may have saved the file earlier on your iPhone or iPad.

So if you do not see a PDF file you can use some other method mentioned below to start your editing and work on your files.

If you wish to only view or print the file your work is done here

Once the file has been saved as .zip, just right-click the file to unzip it and locate the PDF file. If you want to print the JPEG file directly, click Print to PDF option. If you are printing from some other photo app, choose the default option of Microsoft print to pdf.

Step5: Convert Zip file to a Docx or Doc File

Try to open the .zip file directly in Microsoft word or office, see if it opens there. If that works you need to apply the further steps.

If the Office or word does not recognize the ZIP file and you are unable to edit the pages, open the PDF file in the Quick Look Folder and save it. Your PDF will have your complete content. Now convert PDF to word and start editing. If you have the Adobe tool you can convert the word back to PDF when editing is done.
