How to Fix Dim Screen of iPhone 7/7 Plus

Several iPhone 7 and 7 Plus buyers have reported a problem regarding the brightness of their device’s screens. They have shown concern that even when the brightness is maxed out at 100%, the screen appears to be dimly lit. Some have even made comparisons of their phone’s dim screen to the brightly-lit screens of other iPhones.

iPhone 7 / 7 Plus Dim screen can be Very Bugging!

The most fascinating part is that the displays of 7 and 7 Plus were promoted as 25% brighter by Apple. Then what happened with your device? It may be because of default settings or a temporary glitch. In this article, we will explain several ways of fixing this issue.

Disable Auto-Brightness

Disable Auto-Brightness

Auto-brightness is designed to adjust the brightness of the display by using light sensors. It guesses the brightness around and then accordingly increases or decreases the brightness. However, just like any other technology, software, or feature, auto-brightness can also falter in its functionality. It can make the display too bright at night time or too dull under broad daylight. This may be the reason why iPhone 7 or 7 Plus brightness keeps dimming by itself. To ensure this is not the case or to resolve in case this is, it is best to turn the feature off and see if it works.

In case it doesn’t, keep the feature disabled still as you try other methods. It will eliminate the chance of any confusion.

Do the Obvious: Increase the Brightness in Settings App

Instead of changing the brightness on the home screen, adjust the brightness of your phone to a maximum 100 percent using the ‘Settings’ app. You can do it by simply going into the ‘Settings’ app and selecting ‘Display & Brightness’. There you will find the slider that will let you maximize the brightness of your phone’s display.

increase the brightness

This might sound irrelevant suggestion but since we do not know the exact cause of the problem, we can never tell what might actually work. If the problem is caused by a mild bug the adjusting brightness in the Settings might solve it.

Update the Phone’s Software

This is another important step that you should take before moving on to other solutions. To check if there is an update available, head to the ‘Settings’ app and tap into ‘General’. There you will find the namesake option ‘Software Update’. Click on this and check if your phone is currently running on the latest version of iOS. In case there is an update available, install it and see if the display problem has been solved.

Update latest iOS versions

If there were no updates or if even after updating the software, your phone display feels dim-lit, move on to the next solution.

Restart the Phone

Restarting or rebooting a device works like a charm when a temporary error or bug surfaces. This problem is no exception. Therefore, we highly recommend that you first try to solve the problem by restarting the iPhone.

Restart iPhone

Long press the power and volume down buttons together until you see the iconic Apple logo. Once the device restarts, adjust the brightness to the maximum and see if the display is now fully lit as it is supposed to be.

In case the problem prolongs or you had already restarted the device, jump to the next solution.

Disable Reduce White Points Option

There may be a chance that rather than a dim-lit display you are simply looking at a screen with dulled colors. This can be because a feature called ‘Reduce White Points’ is turned on.

Reducing white points affect how bright or dim your phone’s display looks. It lowers the intensity of bright colors displaying on the screen. If you wish to brighten the display, you can try that by disabling this option that is responsible for reducing white points. To do so, follow the steps that are mentioned below:

  • Go to ‘Settings’ app
  • Tap into ‘General’
  • Select the option that says ‘Accessibility’
  • Scroll down on the page and select ‘Display Accommodations’
  • Tap on the toggle and turn of the ‘Reduce White Point’ option

Toggling off this feature would effectively increase the intensity of colors on the screen and make the display look brighter.

If this solution doesn’t help, do not strain yet because there is another practical way of solving the issue.

Disable Reduce Transparency and Darken Colors

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models come with multiple display features that are together responsible for how the screen looks like. ‘Reduce Transparency’ and ‘Darken Colors’ are two of those features. Since Apple built these models to be 25% brighter, it makes sense why they would build so many options to keep that extra brightness in check – for the ease of users. Therefore, in order to make sure that your 100% brightened screen is in fact 100% bright, you might want to disable these two features. To do so, follow the guide below.

  • Open the ‘Settings’ app
  • Go to the ‘General’
  • Select the ‘Accessibility’ option
  • Select ‘Increase Contrast’ and disable ‘Reduce Transparency’
  • Scroll next to it and toggle off ‘Darken Colors’

Disable Color Filters and Invert Colors

Color filters and inversion are great features for users with color blindness or low visibility. However, if someone else enables them accidentally, they might find the display of their iPhones dimmed. To check if this is the reason that is causing the display of your phone to look dull, go to the same settings option where you found ‘Reduce White Points’ and look for the features ‘Color Filters’ and ‘Invert Colors’. If you see the toggles of any or both of these options enabled, disable them.

This should help fix the dim screen of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models.

Reset to the Default Settings

If nothing so far has worked, reset your phone to the factory setting. It will have several effects on the brightness of your iPhone. To reset the device to its factory settings, follow the steps below.

  • Open ‘Settings’
  • Select ‘General’
  • Keep scrolling till you reach the bottom of the screen
  • Locate and select ‘Reset’
  • You will see the ‘Reset All Settings’ option. Tap on it
  • Confirmreset all settings

By following these steps, you will be able to turn the settings on default mode, just the way how they were when you first bought the device. It should fix the issue of the dimmed screen of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Final Resort: Apple Support

If nothing so far has worked, not even resetting the device, then maybe it is best to hand over the issue to the experts. The reason behind the dimmed display can be a software or hardware glitch that is not easy for an uninitiated to solve. If your phone is new, see if you can get a replacement. If it is in warranty, you can head straight to an Apple service center and get it repaired. However, if you are not that lucky, you might want to get help from Apple Support

It is easy to navigate the site and find the exact solution to the problem by talking to one of the professional support executives.
