And that feature is – Nifty Timeline, launched back in the year 2015. This one lets you browse through all the past places that you’ve traveled in the past, along with their respective routes. Basically, it collects the data of your travel places & routes in a timeline format. 

In this article, we will take you through almost every single ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ that you might have in your mind regarding this timeline feature of Google Maps. 

Creating a Timeline

In order to see, revisit & track the timeline of your routes, you first need to turn on your location services for Google Maps. After doing this, the google map timeline will automatically start to reflect the places that you have been to and the path that you have taken to reach any place. 

Steps to Turn On the Timeline Feature

Step1: Open Google Maps App

Step2: Click on the Menu Tab

Step3: Go to Settings>Personal Content>Location Settings

Step4: Switch on the ‘Location Service’ button under the Location Settings

Step5: Switch on the Location Icon to ‘Always’

Let us first share the stepwise guide of tracking the desktop version of Google Map Location History. Also, the measuring parameter for your timeline, whether miles or kilometers, will depend on your country. 

Steps to Track the Location History on Desktop

Step1: Open Google Maps on Your Browser

Step2: Sign-in with the Google account that you’re using on the mobile app

Step3: Click on the Menu bar on the top-left corner of the screen

Step4: Menu Bar>Timeline

Step5: Switch the months by swiping left & right

Step6: Once the month is selected, choose the date for which you wish to browse the location history

Step7: Location History data for the chosen date is displayed on the screen 

Note: You can also save your home/work address on Google Maps. Timeline for the same can also be recorded & saved for being tracked in the future. 

Tracking Google Map Location History on Mobile App

Now, let’s move forward to see how you can track the Google Map location history on your mobile app itself. The same process is to be followed for all types of mobile devices viz. Android-based phones, iPhones & iPads. 

Steps to Track the Location History on Desktop

Step1: Launch the Google Maps App on your device

Step2: Click on the ‘More Options’ button on the top-left corner of the app screen

Step3: Tap on your Timeline

Step4: Tap on the Calendar Icon here

Step5: Choose the date for which you wish to track the location history from the calendar. Also, feel free to switch the months by swiping left & right.

Step6: Google Maps will show you all the routes that you have traveled along with the duration and length of your overall journey.

Note: You can also change the unit of distance set on your Google Maps by going to Settings>Distance Units>Choose Automatic and choose your preference from the two given options – miles & kilometers. 

Disabling Location Tracking on Google Maps

Disabling the location tracking on Google Maps is as easy as it to turning it on. Let us share a stepwise guide here for the same as well:

Step1: Launch the Google Maps app on your mobile

Step2: Click the ‘More Options’ button on the top-left corner of the home screen. 

Step3: Click on the Settings>Personal Content

Step4: Under the ‘Personal Content’ page, click on the ‘Location History’ tab

Step5: Turn the location history off in order to disable the location tracking

Note: If the switch here is green, you’ve given Google Maps the permission to track & record your location & routes. 

Pause the Location History

Pause the Location History on Google Maps. Yes, you can also do that by first, toggling the Location History ‘off’ and then clicking on the ‘Ok’ button on the pop-up that appears on the screen in the response of turning the Location History off. 

Deleting the Location History on Google Maps

Just as you might want to disable the Google Maps Location Tracking system, you also might feel the need to delete it. And Google Maps provides you with both the manual as well as automatic option to do so.

Step1: Launch the Google Maps App

Step2: Click on the ‘Menu’ button on the top-left corner of the screen

Step3: Go to Menu>Timeline>Settings>Location Settings

Step4: In order to delete entire history, click on ‘Delete All Location History’ button

Step3: Settings>Automatically Delete Location History

Step1: Launch Google Maps on your device
